New River Trail State Park

Situated on the scenic New River, at the site of an abandoned railroad right-of-way, this 57-mile park is filled with open trails and pathways for hiking, biking and horseback riding, campgrounds and plenty of great fishing spots. The park offers summertime canoe and bike rentals, boat launches and a horse arena with horse rentals and guided horseback trips. And, the 150-year-old Shot Tower is a popular destination for visitors looking for a little history during their visit.

Park entrance is free. Parking is $2 on weekdays, $3 on weekends. Boat launch fees are $3 per day.

Mark E. Hufeisen Horse Complex

Opened in 2008, this massive complex features a large arena, 600 spectator seats, horse stables, and all on a 16.5-acre site within the New River Trail State Park. Many events are held at the complex throughout the year, including the Cowboy Challenge, the Redneck Rodeo and the Fun Show. The entire complex is available for rental, or visitors who just wish to ride in the arena can pay a $5 daily fee.

Park History

Built on a tract of abandoned railroad land donated by the Norfolk Southern Corporation, New River Trail State Park opened in 1987 with just four miles of trail. Part of the Rails to Trails program, which added acreage over the years, the park now covers 57 miles and offers abundant outdoor recreational opportunities to local residents and visitors alike.


  • Will I need to pay a parking fee at the State Park?

    Yes, parking is $2 per car on weekdays and $3 per car on weekends. Horse trailer parking is $3 and includes the vehicle fee.
  • Are fishing and boating allowed at the State Park?

    Yes, the river is a fine place to fish for everything from bass and catfish to walleye and yellow perch. Kayaking and canoeing is also a popular activity in the park.
